Project - Weta condominiums
These
were designed in mid 2018 by Bryan Peryer and Alan Minson with the hope that
they would be popular and on the basis that they could be a way of measuring
weta population intensities. The bodies are made from macrocarpa and they have
a thin sheet of polycarbonate inside the plywood door.
Botanists
say there’s an inverse relationship between rate and weta populations so we
have made arrangements with the University of Auckland “CatchIT" to conduct population counts
in the Condos on a 3 monthly basis. As at March 2020, 66 Condos have been
distributed.
