Project - Corner chairs
The Mens Shed Auckland East were invited to build a set of 30 plywood wheelchairs to get handicapped children off the floor and looking out at the world at a health project in Tonga.
We were joined by the Saint John and Ellerslie Rotary Club, Plytech and Bunnings to produce and fund the build of these very special chairs.
The Covid lockdown slowed production of the first batch of ten chairs but project leader Aart Rijke (in the red shirt) and his skilled team of (from left) Roger Milne, Nigel High, Paul O'Dowd, Douglas Ormrod, Willem Stortelers and Roger Van Kuylenburg finally completed this stage of the project in just over 500 man hours !! A marathon effort. It is expected we will be able to produce future batches of chairs much quicker. Some design modifications have been made by the building crew which will streamline future production.
The chairs were handed over to the Altus Trust in late 2021 and are now on their way by ship to Tonga.
